Murex is a sea snail found in the Mediterranean Sea. Murex is the source of "royal purple" or "Tyrian purple," the dye used in the robes of monarchs or priests. "Royal purple" was extracted by ancient Phoenicians of Tyre. This purple dye is a brominated compound, very unusual for a naturally occurring organic substance.
Inset: The brominated compound is 6,6'-dibromoindigo. Indigo itself is a naturallly occurring dark blue compound, derived from the indigo plant, a member of the pea family.
